Iqraam Rayners double keeps Sundowns in title hunt

Mamelodi Sundowns moved level on points with Orlando Pirates at the summit of the Betway Premiership following a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

A clinical brace from second-half substitute Iqraam Rayners and a stunning opener from Marcelo Allende ensured the Brazilians kept the pressure on the Buccaneers, though Pirates remain top by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Allende Sets the Tone

The match began with Sundowns asserting their typical dominance in possession, though Sekhukhune remained a threat on the counter. The breakthrough arrived in the 31st minute when Marcelo Allende picked up a pass from Arthur Sales and unleashed a precise right-footed strike from outside the box that flew into the top right corner, leaving Toaster Nsabata with no chance.

Sekhukhune almost responded immediately through Shaune Mogaila, but Ronwen Williams was equal to the task, keeping the Brazilians in the lead heading into the break.

Grobler Stuns Loftus

The second half saw Sekhukhune emerge with renewed vigour. After a series of tactical substitutions and missed opportunities from Sundowns, the visitors found their equaliser. In the 70th minute, veteran poacher Bradley Grobler rose highest in the six-yard box to head home a Vuyo Letlapa cross, silencing the Pretoria crowd.

The Rayners Show

With the game hanging in the balance, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso turned to his bench, introducing Iqraam Rayners for Brayan Léon. The move paid immediate dividends.

In the 81st minute, Rayners restored the lead, finishing a lightning-fast break with a right-footed shot from close range. Debutant Monnapule Saleng produced the assist a few minutes after coming in. As Sekhukhune pushed forward in search of another equaliser during stoppage time, they were caught out once more.

Rayners capitalised on the space behind the defence in the 94th minute, firing a spectacular shot from outside the box into the top left corner to secure the three points and complete his brace.

The closing stages were frantic, with Khuliso Mudau and Jayden Adams picking up yellow cards as Sundowns looked to see out the result. The win moves Sundowns to 41 points after 18 games, identical to Orlando Pirates, setting the stage for a dramatic photo-finish to the league title race.

Durban City leapfrog Kaizer Chiefs into third after edging Marumo Gallants

In a simultaneous Sunday clash just a few kilometres away at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, Durban City FC secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants.

The decisive moment arrived just sixty seconds after the restart when Saziso Magawana found the back of the net. Magawana’s clinical left-footed strike from the centre of the box flew into the roof of the net, thanks to a well-timed assist from Kyle Jurgens.

That single goal was enough to secure all three points on the road for the visitors. The result has significant implications for the Betway Premiership table, as Durban City leapfrog Kaizer Chiefs to claim third place with 31 points. While they sit one point ahead of Amakhosi, it is worth noting that Chiefs currently hold two games in hand.

In contrast, the defeat leaves Marumo Gallants languishing in the relegation scrap. Occupying 14th place, they sit just three points above bottom-of-the-log Magesi FC, who remain anchored in the automatic relegation spot.
