Ghana’s number one goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare has welcomed the healthy competition from second choice Solomon Agbasi at club level Hearts of Oak.
Agbasi, 25, showed grit, consistency and high level performance after Benjamin Asare left with the Ghana senior team for the 2025 Kirin Cup where he kept the post in the Black Stars 1-0 loss to South Korea at the Seoul World Cup Stadium last year.
The former Dreams fc shot stopper manned Hearts of Oak’s post in eight games, keeping clean sheets in all those, a momentary feat that threatened Asare’s return to the post.
Asare however reappeared for the 2000 CAF Champions League winners from a reported injury recovery, recording two clean sheets in their 1-0 win at Hohoe United and the goalless home draw to Dreams fc.
Benjamin Asare said: “It’s good that I get that competition but the number one remains the number one because they are the coaches and I don’t know their decision,” Benjamin Asare said.
“Anything they say I have to accept because I am a player [and] when they put me on the field I must do my job so I thank and I thank the supporters and the management for giving me this platform to continue my career.
Benjamin Asare, 33, was instrumental in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification where the four time African champions top Group I with 25 points from 10-games.
The former Great Olympics gloves-man has set a target of making the Black Stars squad for the World Cup where Ghana is paired with England, Croatia and Panama in Group L.
“That is my aim and that is my target because I want to make it in life because football is my job so I give my all so that Ghanaians will see that I am a good goalkeeper.
Benjamin Asare joined Hearts of Oak in 2024 becoming the club’s first choice goalkeeper, an exploit that subsequently earned him a debut senior call up under German trained Otto Addo.
