Asisat Oshoala debunks retirement rumors after Nigeria’s WAFCON triumph

Super Falcons of Nigeria forward, Asisat Oshoala has dismissed speculations claiming she is set to retire from international football at the heels of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals in Morocco.

Following Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco to clinch a historic 10th WAFCON title, Oshoala addressed the rumours while speaking to journalists after the thrilling final on Saturday.

The 30-year-old affirmed that she is active and ready to put on the green and white of Nigeria when she’s called upon as it is her job. “I don’t know where that came from but agenda must but agenda. I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on.”

Oshoala made Nigeria’s final 23-player squad for the WAFCON. The rumors gained traction partly due to her reduced role in the tournament, which saw the Bay FC forward playing time limited, often featuring in a supporting capacity or coming off the bench as coach Justin Madugu opted for various tactical approaches.

The Nigerian international career began in 2013, and she has scored in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cups – becoming the first African player to achieve the feat.

Oshoala is a six time African Footballer of the Year, solidifying her status as arguably the continent’s greatest female player. With the 2024 WAFCON triumph, she has now added a fourth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title to her collection, having previously won the prestigious continental trophy in 2014, 2016, and 2018.
