Aubameyang admits Chelsea move was a ‘big mistake’

Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, currently playing for Olympique de Marseille, has admitted that joining Chelsea was a major mistake in his career.

Aubameyang moved to Stamford Bridge in June 2022 as part of a swap deal that saw Marcos Alonso join Barcelona in return. However, the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward now concedes the decision wasn’t the right one.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Aubameyang said:

“Moving there was a big mistake. At that time, I was going through a difficult period at Barcelona — my house had been robbed, and the club needed to sell either me or Memphis Depay. The only option was Chelsea, so I said, ‘Okay, for my family, I’ll go — even if it’s to Chelsea.’”

He added:

“I thought it would be fine. Olivier Giroud had moved from Arsenal to Chelsea without any problems, but for me, it was completely different.”

During the 2022–23 season, Aubameyang made 21 appearances for Chelsea, scoring just three goals in all competitions.

After leaving the Premier League side, the Gabonese international joined Marseille, then spent a season at Al Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia before returning to the French club at the start of the current season.
