Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returned from international duty to lead Olympique Marseille to a dominant 5-1 victory over OGC Nice in Ligue 1 action on Friday.
After coming up short in his bid to qualify the Gabon national team for a first-ever World Cup appearance, the forward shook off the disappointment upon his return to club duty to provide a goal and two assists for OM in a lopsided victory away from home.
The former Arsenal star fired in from close range to open the scoring in the 11th minute after Benjamin Pavard nodded a corner kick towards goal. Mason Greenwood doubled the advantage for the visitors soon after the half hour mark.
It did not get any better for hosts Nice in the second half. Greenwood added his second goal soon after half time and then Aubameyang set up Timothy Weah to make it 4-0 in favor of OM before an hour had expired.
Nice pulled a goal back soon after but the visitors were not done. In the 74th minute, Aubameyang added another assist when Igor Paixão made it 5-1.
He now has 6 goals and 7 assists in 15 appearances across all competitions this season. OM move back into top spot with one point separating them from Paris Saint-Germain following Friday’s result. They will next return to UEFA Champions League action on Tuesday when they host Newcastle United.
