Sporting Director Wolfgang Fiala told the newly promoted team’s media that they did their homework before snatching the midfielder from Kaizer Chiefs.
The 29-year-old made a surprise decision to leave the Betway Premiership team he used to captain to sign a two-year contract with Ried. The deal has an option of an extension.
After unveiling the player who has six caps with Bafana Bafana, Fiala disclosed that Maart was on their radar for some time.
“We are very happy that Yusuf has chosen SV Oberbank Ried,” the director told Ried’s media.
“We have been observing him for some time and are convinced that he is a perfect fit for our playing style.”
Fiala highlighted the specific qualities the former AmaKhosi on-field leader would bring to Austria.
“Yusuf is a very complete midfielder: He can steer the game, is strong in duels, is willing to run hard, and also has a good eye for his teammates. He also brings leadership qualities that will be beneficial to our young team. His international experience and his always-winning mentality were crucial factors for us in this signing,” he added.
Speaking after being unveiled, the former Sekhukhune United star vowed to make the most of the opportunity to play in Europe.
“This is a great opportunity for me to play here in Europe. I’m really looking forward to gaining new experiences,” Maart explained.
“I want to give my best in every game and be a great contributor to the team, both on and off the pitch. I know Austrian football to be highly intense and physical. Ried is known for the great atmosphere in the stadium and its fans.”
The midfielder had extended his contract with the Glamour Boys for two years only to make the U-turn and sign for SV Ried.
