Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed the availability of Nigeria forward Taiwo Awoniyi for their Premier League fixture against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
The Super Eagle was injured during Forest’ 4-2 Emirates FA Cup fifth round win against Exeter City and went on to miss the 2-1 Premier League defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottages last weekend.
Awoniyi, who had scored in the FA Cup fixture, had jumped to challenge for a high ball but was hit in the face by Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth, who was attempting to clear the ball to safety. The impact left both players down on the pitch, and the medical personnel swiftly attended to the situation, but Awoniyi was later stretchered off.
Later, Forest manager Nuno Espirito confirmed that the Super Eagles star had suffered a broken nose. “It was a concussion and a broken nose. He was in a lot of pain,” he explained.
“But he has a smile on his face because he scored for us and did an amazing job. We are delighted for him (to get his goal).”
Ahead of the Newcastle fixture, Espirito Santo has confirmed the return of the 27-year-old forward. “Yes, yes, it is clear on the concussion protocol,” Santo told reporters on Friday.
“So, he (Awoniyi) is available. He will have to wear a mask, but he is available.”
So far in the league, Awoniyi has featured 19 times and scored one goal.
