Super Falcons forward Omorinsola Babajide has discussed his celebration after scoring the second goal in their 3-0 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations dominance against Tunisia at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca on Sunday.
After Asisat Oshoala had opened the scoring for the Super Falcons with a powerful header, Babajide, who was a constant threat down the left wing, made it 2-0, but after her effort was confirmed following a brief VAR review.
Substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo sealed the emphatic opening win for Nigeria after he slotted home from close range following a cross from another substitute Okoronkwo.
Speaking afterwards, Babajide explained that the goal, which was her first for the nine-time African champions, was for Jota, who had passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre Silva.
“It was for Diogo Jota and his brother as well. That was like one of his biggest celebrations at the club especially. We call it the signature celebration really,” said Babajide as quoted by Complete Sports.
“I just wanted to do something for him. He was like one of my best players at the club when I was there as well. May his soul rest in perfect peace, both of them.”
Before moving to her current club Brighton Women, Babajide played for Liverpool between 2018 to 2022, and was part of the squad that saw Liverpool relegated to the Championship in 2020.
Babajide was Liverpool’s second highest goal scorer in the 2018/19 WSL season with two campaign goals.
