Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele has confirmed that the disciplinary issue involving defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been swiftly resolved internally, ensuring the squad can maintain its full focus on the looming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The national team’s camp preparations were overshadowed earlier this week when head coach Hugo Broos publicly chastised the former Orlando Pirates centre-back for reporting late after missing a flight from Durban.
The incident prompted Broos to label the conduct “unprofessional” and even led to public scrutiny over the coach’s wider comments regarding Mbokazi’s imminent move to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire.
However, speaking at the team’s farewell event at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Thursday, Mkhalele stated the matter is now closed.
“I won’t go to the actual what you call, each and every point,” the former South African international said.
“But I’d say that issue has been resolved because it is important for us to make sure that we resolve issues like that in order to make sure again that we continue with our preparations.
“So the issue of Mbokazi has been settled.”
The controversy began when Mbokazi arrived late for the pre-AFCON camp, despite having been granted a brief extension following his duties with the Buccaneers in the Carling Knockout. Broos, known for his firm stance on discipline, was visibly angered, suggesting the 20-year-old was exhibiting a “star” attitude.
Furthermore, the Belgian coach used the press conference to criticise Mbokazi’s transfer to Chicago Fire, questioning the career path and making comments about the player’s agent that drew accusations of being sexist and misogynistic in certain media quarters.
Mkhalele’s update confirms that the technical team has prioritised unity and clarity within the squad as they enter the final stages of their training. Bafana Bafana, who are set to depart for Morocco, have one final friendly scheduled at home against Ghana next Tuesday in Dobsonville.
