Bafana Bafana legend joins Sekhukhune United

Sekhukhune United has made a significant addition to its technical bench, confirming the appointment of legendary goalkeeper Andre Arendse as assistant coach, reuniting him with head coach Eric Tinkler.

The move, announced on Thursday by Sekhukhune, sees two prominent members of the iconic 1996 AFCON-winning Bafana Bafana squad link up at Babina Noko, signalling a major statement of intent as the club looks to cement its position among the league’s top contenders.

Arendse, a highly respected figure in South African football, joins Tinkler on the bench. His last high-profile role saw him successfully save SuperSport United from relegation last season before he recently parted ways with the newly-formed Siwelele FC earlier this campaign.

Sekhukhune United confirmed the latest development via a club statement, emphasising the history shared between the two coaches.

Sekhukhune United chairman Simon Malatji welcomed the appointment, highlighting their strong professional relationship: “Coaches Eric Tinkler and Andre Arendse know each other from their playing days and have not only crossed paths as coaching rivals, but lifted the 2017 MTN8 trophy together at ‘Matsantsantsa’.”

Malatji added: “They share a strong rapport, and we are confident that it’ll translate positively in the team’s performance and results.”

Arendse brings a wealth of experience both as a player—where he earned 67 caps for Bafana Bafana and helped Fulham FC gain promotion to the English Premier League—and as a coach, with Sekhukhune hoping this familiar partnership can drive them to a strong finish in the Betway Premiership.
