Hugo Broos, the coach of Bafana Bafana, has weighed in on the notable absence of Nigerian star striker Victor Osimhen, dismissing the idea that it gives his side a clear advantage in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The 26-year-old was forced off the field in the 35th minute during the Super Eagles’ last match against Rwanda, following a strong challenge with Claude Niyomugabo at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.
It was later confirmed that Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray, sustained a bruised chin and will miss the crucial fixture against Bafana. He woke up feeling discomfort, which ruled him out of the Tuesday night match.
Despite the former Napoli star’s impressive goal-scoring record, Broos insists that Nigerian coach Éric Chelle has a deep enough squad to cope with the loss.
“We also have injuries, and I think Osimhen is a very good striker,” Broos said during the pre-match press conference at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. “But I think the coach has lots of options to replace him.”
The pivotal match between the two African football giants is set to kick off on Tuesday at 18:00 SAST at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein with three vital points at stake.
A victory for Bafana Bafana would significantly boost their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Currently, coach Hugo Broos’ team sits atop Group C with 16 points from seven matches.
For Nigeria, a win is crucial to keep their slim qualification hopes alive. They are currently in third place with 10 points from the same number of games.
