Bafana Bafana goalie reveals chronic condition halting his career

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, formerly with Bidvest Wits and Maritzburg United, Jethren Barr has disclosed that a chronic health condition, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), is preventing him from playing football.

The 29-year-old, who was last with Irish Premier Division side Drogheda United and hasn’t played since last year’s Sports Direct FAI Cup triumph, shared the news on his social media platforms on Wednesday.

Barr, who notably played all games for Bafana Bafana at the 2023 COSAFA Cup until the semi-finals, explained his absence from the pitch.

“Over the past couple of months, I’ve been unwell and not able to return to playing football,” he wrote. “The truth is, I have been diagnosed with a condition called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome [ME/CFS].”

He described ME/CFS as a “complex, often debilitating condition that affects how my body handles energy, rest, and even basic daily tasks.”

Barr admitted that some days are better than others, calling it a “humbling and challenging journey.” This condition has forced him to step back from his professional playing career, leading him to decline numerous offers to return to football, which he described as “heartbreaking but necessary.”

Despite the challenging diagnosis, the former Portadown keeper remains optimistic about his recovery and eventual return to the game, though he acknowledges it could take years. “I’m currently working with a team of specialists to combat this condition and hopefully recover, which I am told can take a year,” he added, concluding his message with a request for prayers.
