Former Bafana Bafana winger Luther Singh scores in AEL Limassol win

South African winger Luther Singh was on the scoresheet Friday with the former Bafana Bafana member finishing the scoring as AEL Limassol defeated Paralimni 3-0 in action from the Cypriot top flight.

With the hosts already up 2-0 against bottom side, Singh put Paralimni out of their misery in the 65th minute with an excellent strike. Awarded a free kick on the left wing, the member of South Africa’s 2020 Olympic squad curled in a beauty for his second goal of the season from nine matches.

Ever since making his first impression in European club football with GAIS in 2015, the 28-year-old has had a nomadic existence. A move to Portuguese side Braga led to numerous appearances for the club’s reserve team before loans to three other Portuguese clubs as well as time spent with FC Copenhagen in Denmark and in Serbia with Cukaricki.

His latest move to AEL came ahead of the 2024-25 season where he has enjoyed consistent playing time. The club remain in 8th place on the 14-team table with the result, accumulating 13 points in 10 matches.

A young phenom who gained plenty of hype early in his career after an early move to European club football, Singh has not been in the reckoning for the South Africa national team after previously starring for the nation’s U-20 team as well as featuring for the Olympic U-23 team in 2020.

The Soweto native won the Golden Boot at the 2016 COSAFA U-20 Championship before capturing the same award at the 2017 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, also being named to the Team of the Tournament.

He has 3 goals in 13 appearances for Bafana Bafana, with his last appearance for the senior team coming in a 2022 World Cup qualifying 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe in early September 2021.
