Appollis strikes as Bafana share spoils with Panama at Moses Mabhida

Bafana Bafana began their final stretch of 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Panama at a vibrant Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday night.

A second-half strike from Orlando Pirates star Oswin Appollis cancelled out Yoel Bárcenas’ opener, as Hugo Broos used the encounter to test the depth of his squad before heading to Cape Town for the second leg of the international friendly double-header.

First Half: Panama Strike Early

The visitors started with intent, testing Ronwen Williams as early as the second minute when Carlos Harvey forced a low save from the Bafana skipper. Panama’s persistence paid off in the 23rd minute; Cecilio Waterman turned provider, sliding a neat pass to Yoel Bárcenas, who clinically slotted a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner to silence the home crowd.

South Africa struggled with the offside trap throughout the half, with Lyle Foster twice being flagged. However, the tide began to turn late in the period. Teboho Mokoena and Foster both saw goalbound efforts saved by Orlando Mosquera, who had replaced the injured Luis Mejía in the Panama goal. Ime Okon nearly levelled matters in stoppage time, but his header from a Tshepang Moremi cross whistled just wide of the post.

Second Half: Appollis Finds the Breakthrough For Bafana

Broos’ halftime talk clearly resonated, as South Africa emerged with renewed vigour. Just three minutes into the restart, the equaliser arrived. Khuliso Mudau rose highest to meet a cross, nodding a perfectly weighted headed pass into the path of Oswin Appollis. The Polokwane City winger made no mistake, firing a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

The game became a tactical chess match thereafter, with both coaches ringing the changes. Relebohile Mofokeng and Jayden Adams were introduced at the hour mark to inject pace, replacing veteran Themba Zwane and Sphephelo Sithole.

Panama almost snatched a late winner in the 80th minute when César Yanis found space in the box, but his powerful effort rattled the right-hand post and bounced clear—a huge let-off for the South African defence.

The final ten minutes saw a flurry of substitutions for the hosts, with Thabang Matuludi and Samukele Kabini earning minutes in place of Mudau and Aubrey Modiba. Despite a late surge of free-kicks won by Tshepang Moremi and Appollis in dangerous areas, the Panamanian defence held firm to ensure the spoils were shared.

South Africa will now look to sharpen their finishing as they travel to the Mother City. The second friendly against the Central Americans is scheduled for Tuesday, 31 March, at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
