Bafana star hits triple figures: Barker hails defender’s ‘solid professionalism’

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker was full of praise for star defender Thabo Moloisane, marking the Bafana Bafana player’s rapid ascent after he celebrated his 100th appearance for the club.

Moloisane achieved the significant milestone during Stellies’ hard-fought 1-0 victory over AS Otohô in the CAF Confederation Cup Group C clash, which was hosted at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane due to venue constraints in the Western Cape.

The centre-back, who arrived at the club at the start of the 2023/24 season, has become indispensable to Barker’s setup. His tenure has already seen him lift the 2023 Carling Knockout trophy and reach back-to-back MTN8 finals.

Speaking after the continental win, a beaming Barker highlighted Moloisane’s remarkable consistency and dedication.

“I’m very proud of Thabo,” Barker stated. “He came to us after a tough relegation with Maritzburg, and since then, he has played 100 games. He is the only player to reach 100 who has started every single game—others hit the century mark coming on as substitutes.”

“For him to start 100 games for the club is really good and a proud moment. He’s done really well for us,” the coach added, underscoring the defender’s ‘Iron Man’ status.

Barker further emphasised Moloisane’s off-field commitment, which has played a part in his recognition by the national team.

“Thabo has also done very well to get himself in and around the Bafana team. He’s a solid professional, hardworking and very committed. Importantly, he’s also a winner,” said Barker. “I am really proud of what he’s achieved in this time with us.”

Following their successful continental opener, Moloisane and his teammates will quickly turn their attention to their next challenge: facing Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars FC in Zanzibar on Saturday. Singida Black Stars FC heads into the game having suffered a 2-0 defeat to Algeria’s CR Belouizdad.
