Barker: ‘My Stellenbosch FC to Simba SC switch, bittersweet’

Coach Steve Barker has commented on his switch from South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC for Tanzanian Mainland Premier League giants Simba SC.

The Premier Soccer League mentor said the need for career growth and pursuit of new challenges influenced his decision.

“It is a bittersweet decision, but I feel the time is right for Stellenbosch to enter a new era with someone else at the helm, and I can only wish the club continued success in the future,” he told Stellenbosch FC website.

“I believe that taking up a new and exciting challenge at one of the biggest clubs on the continent is something I need to pursue to further my own personal growth and ambitions as a coach.”

How did Steve Barker perform with Stellenbosch FC?

Barker presided over 309 matches across all competitions. He guided Stellenbosch to the PSL from the National First Division in the 2018-19 season.

Barker is credited with leading Stellenbosch SC to the Carling Knockout glory in 2023.

Barker also guided the Western Cape-based club to the MTN8 final in 2024 and 2025 paving the way for the consecutive qualifications to the CAF Confederation Cup.

Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie also paid tribute to Barker.

“Steve’s achievements on the field speak for themselves, but his influence has been just as important in helping shape the culture, identity, and professional standards that have become synonymous with Stellenbosch FC in recent years,” Benadie told the club’s website.

Simba SC have hired Barker to replace Dimitar Pantev whose contract was terminated last month due to unsatisfactory performance of the team.

Barker is expected to revive Simba’s chase for the Ligi Kuu Bara title.
