Bayelsa Queens unbeaten run ends, Nasarawa Amazons move to the top of NWFL Super six

Bayelsa Queens suffered a difficult morning at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne as they lost 1-0 against defending champions Edo Queens on in Matchday 4 of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six on Thursday, ending their 17-match unbeaten run.



Alaba Olabiyi came close to scoring in the 30th minute when she came face to face with Edo Queens goalkeeper, but Ijeoma Uzoma made a brilliant save to deny Bayelsa Queens a goal. And the Prosperity Girls had another opportunity to score but the ball bounced off the posts.


The Prosperity Girls found themselves trailing in the 45th minute, courtesy of substitute Goodness Osigwe’s goal. The reverse half also saw Bayelsa Queens missing a flurry of goal scoring chances after some tactical substitutions by Coach Whyte Ogbonda.


Head coach of Bayelsa Queens, Whyte Ogbonda, said football can be cruel, as his girls played better but their undoing was not taking their chances.


“We did all we could, but you know sometimes football can be cruel and today is one of such days, and you know Edo Queens are the defending champions, but I promised an improved performance from my players against Naija Ratels.


I believe we are going to have a great game against Naija Ratels. I can guarantee that our approach will be much better, as there is still everything to play for,”


The loss drops Bayelsa to third spot in the NWFL Super six table.


Meanwhile, Nasarawa Amazons goalless draw against debutants Remo Stars Ladies saw the sit top of the standings after round 4 action of the 2025 NWFL Super six.


The surprise table toppers in the round robin tournament frustrated 4th placed Remo Stars Ladies’ attacking forays to secure a a crucial point draw in the last game of the day.


The stalemate leaves Amazons on 8 points, 1 more than second placed Edo Queens who beat Bayelsa United 2-0 in today’s opening match.


Elsewhere, Rivers Angels secured their first win in the tournament after defeating bottom feeders, Naija Ratels 2-0.


Titilayo Aweda goal in the 25th minute and Mary Moses’ goals 86th minutes earned the most decorated NWFL side the victory which keeps the Port Harcourt based club in 5th position with 4 points.


All the teams will observe rest on Friday to resume proceedings on Saturday for the final round of action which could have huge bearings on who emerge as champions of the Nigerian women’s top-flight.


The final day features a pivotal top-of-the-table clash between Amazons and Edo Queens, a match with title-deciding implications. Elsewhere, Bayelsa faces Ratels, and Rivers takes on Remo Stars Ladies.
