Benjani Mwaruwari struggles continue: Highlanders FC still winless

The struggle continues for Premier League legend Benjani Mwaruwari in his coaching career with Highlanders FC back home in Zimbabwe.

The former Portsmouth FC and Manchester City FC striker has now extended his winless run with the club, that is also called Bosso, to five Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches this season.

The latest frustrating result for Mwaruwari came on Friday when Highlanders FC drew 0-0 at home Barbourfields Stadium against FC Platinum.

Mwaruwari optimistic despite Highlanders FC struggles

In a post-match interview with the media, the former Warriors striker remained optimistic that the goals would eventually come.

“It is unfortunate that we did not get those goals again, but I am very happy with the clean sheet…We are missing in the final-third. It is not going to be easy. We have to keep working hard and try to improve every day,” he said.

Boss have failed to score in the last three straight games including against MWOS and Simba Bhora with previous results against Bulawayo Chiefs being 1-1 and two-all with Dynamos FC.

The results are quite ironic considering that Mwaruwari was a top striker in the Premier League finding the back of the net 26 times in 119 appearances spread among Manchester City, Portsmouth and Sunderland FC.

The result came a day after the Manchester City star accused the Bulawayo-based club’s management of putting spanners in his works.

He cited the Zimbabwe team’s delays to secure work permits for new players as an example of management’s efforts to frustrate him since he joined them two months ago.

Questions on Highlanders FC’s management

The former Portsmouth FC striker added that he has been working under difficult conditions as most of his requests for technical support fall on deaf ears.

“I am sorry to say this, but I must be open on some of the things that are happening in the club. I have been working in difficult conditions. Everyone didn’t want me here. That is a fact.”

“If I keep quiet, it has been long. I can’t take it anymore. For those who don’t know want me, it is okay, but I will fight to make sure this team will grow. I know this team is in my heart and those who feel like it is not, it is unfortunate. It is high time I say this. I feel I needed best support, but I don’t have it.”

Mwaruwari is making a return into coaching after he was sacked barely three games into his job yet with another Castle Lager PSL side Ngezi Platinum in 2022.

Management of Bosso hired the former Premier League striker as head coach in controversial circumstances after making U-turn on the earlier unveiling of former Bafana Bafana assistant trainer Thabo Senong to the same position, only to throw the South African under the bus.

Highlanders FC will now shift their attention to Monday’s meeting with Castle Lager defending champions Scottland FC.
