Ghana: Berekum Chelsea suffer robbery attack, one player dead

Ghana Premier League club Berekum Chelsea suffered a robbery attack on their return from match week 29 against Samartex in Samreboi on Sunday.

The former champions’ team bus was attacked by a group of armed men who barricaded the road to stop their passage along the Bibiani-Goaso road in Ahyiresu.

Masked and wielding assault rifles, the men opened fire at Berekum Chelsea’s team bus with the driver making an attempt to maneuver his way to safety.

Berekum Chelsea lost at Samartex

The entire was sent into jitters with some players fleeing into nearby bush for safety.

Unfortunately, winger Dominic Frimpong was hit in the head and had to be rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital where the 20-year-old was pronounced dead.

A statement by the club on its social media handle read:

“On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage.

“Masked men welding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into near by bushes to take cover.

“Unfortunately one of our players is badly injured and is receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital waiting to be transferred to the regional hospital.

“We are grateful to the police patrol team for its rapid response, sports journalists who quickly decimated the information, the town of Ashiresu which provided temporary shelter for our players and officials of Bibiani Gold stars who have offered tremendous support.

“We are also grateful to all well wishers and last but not the least the President of the Ghana Football Association for his prompt response in this difficult moment.

“We will update the general public as developments unfold and wish our player God’s speed in his recovery.

Berekum Chelsea are battling relegation

Frimpong has been one of the revelation of the current campaign for Berekum Chelsea scoring two goals in 13 league appearances for the club this season.

Meanwhile, some players and officials are yet to be found after running into the forest to seek refuge following the deadly encounter.

Berekum Chelsea lost the game 1-0 at Samartex on Sunday with the result worsening their relegation battle.

They currently sit in 16th on the league table with 35 points, same as Swedru All Blacks after 29 league games played this season.
