Betway Premiership: Alexandre salutes Marumo Gallants’ winning mentality

Marumo Gallants FC coach Lafitte Alexandre has lauded his charges’ mentality after they weathered the storm against Richards Bay FC to win on the road in South Africa on Saturday.

The Frenchman said this in a post-match interview with SuperSport Television after beating hosts Bay 2-1 on the opening day of the Betway Premiership.

“It is a fantastic result. We played with 10 players, so that is a good three points. I think after the red card in the game, we had a fantastic mentality,” Alexandre said.

“We believed in ourselves and I think it is good, but I don’t understand this decision of the referee. Before this, we had a good start and after the decision of the referee, we had a good mentality. I think it is difficult when you play with 10 players, notably away.”

The coach added: “For me, the game was very important for the followers for the next game because when you win with 10 players during one hour, it gives you the trust. It is very important for the team. I hope in the next game, we can play with 11 players and win.”

Gallants won the three points largely due to the hosts’ comical defending. Bay goalkeeper Salim Magoola spilled the ball into his own net after failing to handle a long-range shot from Simo Mbhele. That error gifted Gallants a later winner.

Bheki Mabhuza and substitute Simo Mbhele’s goals in either half won it for Gallants who were reduced to 10 men in the 39th minute when Edgar Manaka was shown a red card. Substitute Lundi Mahala scored the hosts’ consolation goal in the 55th minute.

Bay’s coach Ronnie Gabriel slammed his team for conceding cheaply in the game against Gallants on Saturday.
