Durban was the setting for Sunday’s Betway Premiership action as TS Galaxy were brought back to Earth by a dramatic comeback from AmaZulu while Durban City continued their solid form in South Africa’s top flight.
TS Galaxy appeared set to celebrate back-to-back victories in the earlier match on Sunday but two goals in the final minutes completed a spirited comeback for AmaZulu, who opened 2026 with a 3-2 victory as well as a big morale boost to coach Arthur Zwane’s side.
The Durban club looked nowhere near capable of scoring three goals after a dry first half that saw visitors Galaxy subdue their hosts at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. But the observers who remained through seventy minutes were in for a grand finale that began with Victor Letsoalo’s header from a Mory Keita corner kick.
That was only the beginning of several momentum swings. Hero of the day Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya struck back with a finish from Athini Maqokola’s cross before the visitors put their noses back in front with Zimbabwe international Junior Zindoga’s first goal in the South African top flight.
But after the 81st minute strike from Zindoga, the 89th minute saw Ngwenya’s cross set up substitute Mondli Mbanjwa to smash in the equalizer. AmaZulu wanted more and they were rewarded for their final push in stoppage time when Ngwenya’s shot snuck by Galaxy keeper Ira Tapé, created by a second assist from Maqokola.
In the later match on Sunday, Trevor Mokwena rose up to head in Saziso Magawana’s corner kick for the only goal in Durban City’s 1-0 home victory over Polokwane City at the Chatsworth Stadium.
