South Africa’s Betway Premiership remains tightly contested after the 11th round of the Betway Premiership, where AmaZulu moved into a top-5 position while top contenders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates played to a draw in Pretoria.
Veteran midfielder Hendrick Ekstein scored twice to give AmaZulu back-to-back league victories with their latest result a 3-0 win at Chippa United on Saturday. Arthur Zwane’s side have been a bit inconsistent this season but it appears that they are establishing themselves as contenders to qualify for CAF club competition next season.
Right behind AmaZulu in sixth place is TS Galaxy, who continued Stellenbosch FC’s struggles on Sunday with a 2-0 victory. Seluleko Mahlambi applied a header to a cross from talented winger Puso Dithejane inside ten minutes for the Rockets, who came out on top in an even clash. Stellies have now won only once in their last seven league matches despite advancing to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage last weekend.
After starting off strong, Sekhukhune United are hitting a wall despite sitting in second position. A second consecutive league defeat arrived on Friday at the hands of Siwelele, who climbed out of the relegation zone a week after holding Kaizer Chiefs to a 0-0 draw. Also on Friday, Kaizer Chiefs found a late goal to take down a stubborn Durban City side.
South Africa U-20 international Siviwe Magidigidi provided the only goal of the match to deal another blow to Sekhukhune, whose star striker Bradley Grobler has hit a brief rough patch.
Elsewhere, Golden Arrows thrashed Marumo Gallants 4-0 in the final match of the weekend while Polokwane City were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Richards Bay. In a clash between potential relegation candidates, Orbit College overcame Magesi FC on Saturday with a 3-1 victory.
The league will continue with midweek fixtures on Tuesday with AmaZulu, Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune among the teams in action.
