Betway Premiership: Pirates shut out Magesi to stay on course for top spot

Orlando Pirates remain in pole position to become the leaders in South Africa’s Betway Premiership following a 2-0 victory over bottom side Magesi FC on Saturday.

Star playmaker Relebohile Mofokeng was the subject of praise from Bucs supporters after combining with Yanela Mbuthuma for two first half goals. Mbuthuma opened the scoring inside ten minutes on an assist from Mofokeng before the 21-year-old doubled the hosts’ advantage close to halftime at the Orlando Amstel Arena.

In the 9th minute, Mofokeng to free down the left wing and provided the cross for Mbuthuma to control and fire past Magesi shot stopper Elvis Chipezeze. The striker returned the favor in the 41st minute when he and Mofokeng executed a slick combination before the Bafana Bafana attacker side-footed an accurate low effort past Chipezeze.

Pirates are now level on 32 points with reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, with one game in hand on Masandawana.

Earlier on Saturday, Chippa United capitalized on a disastrous performance from goalkeeper Darren Keet to overcome Durban City 2-0.

Former Bafana Bafana keeper Keet was caught on the ball in the 33rd minute, allowing Sinoxolo Kwayiba to score the first of his two goals in a home victory for the Chilli Boys.

AmaZulu earned three important points away from home in a 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at the Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. Halftime substitute Mondli Mbanjwa rewarded coach Arthur Zwane with a 72nd minute winner to move Usuthu level with Kaizer Chiefs on 30 points in third place.

In another later match, Polokwane City and Orbit College played to a 2-2 draw. Sunday’s lone match will feature TS Galaxy hosting Sekhukhune United, where the Rockets can overtake the visitors for 5th place with a victory.
