In the only match from South Africa’s Betway Premiership on Sunday, Tholo Matuludi’s late match winner gave Polokwane City a 2-1 victory over Chippa United.
With only seconds remaining in second half stoppage time, Puleng Marema’s free kick service from the right wing was perfect for Matuludi to leap up and head in his first goal of the 2025-26 season. It was a relief for the home side’s supporters at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, who watched their team control the match.
A disappointing start left Polokwane chasing the match when a clever attack down the right wing from Chippa resulted in Ayabulela Konqobe’s low shot striking the post before going in to give the visitors the lead in the 5th minute.
The hosts went to work and were rewarded just before halftime when a handball in the Chippa penalty area resulted in a penalty kick. Lebohang Nkaki placed his spot kick into the roof of the net past Chippa backup goalkeeper Elson Sithole, who was deputizing for regular starter Stanley Nwabali.
Chippa produced few clearcut opportunities and in a second half that was less exciting until the very end when Matuludi’s goal sent the home supporters into ecstasy. Polokwane move into the top five positions following the victory with 12 points from 7 matches, while Chippa remain at the foot of the table.
