Sekhukhune United increased their lead atop the Betway Premiership despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United at home to finish Wednesday’s action from the top flight of South Africa.
Bradley Grobler rescured a point for hosts Sekhukhune with his penalty kick in the 79th minute but the hosts failed to fully capitalize on their opportunities at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Nigeria national team goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali returned to his place between the sticks for Chippa but did not have much to deal with in a sleepy first half. The action increased after halftime with Nwabali only able to watch as Keletso Makgalwa’s effort rattled the crossbar less than three minutes into the second stanza.
A few minutes later, Chippa struck against the run of play when Justice Figuareido pursued a hopeful pass towards the corner. After winning the ball, the Eswatini national team star crossed low for Boy Madingwane to lift over onrushing Sekhukhune goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata and bundle into the empty net.
However, the hosts woke up and were able to scrap an equalizer through star striker Grobler from the spot after Chippa defender Seun Ndlovu was controversially whistled for a foul on an aggressive aerial challenge.
TS Galaxy, Richards Bay and Orbit College emerged as winners on Wednesday along with surprise victors Golden Arrows, who toppled reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the early match from Wednesday. Stellenbosch’s struggles continued with a 0-0 draw at home against Durban City.
Kaizer Chiefs were held to a draw at home by Marumo Gallants in a day of surprise results, leaving Tuesday winners Orlando Pirates the big winners alongside TS Galaxy from midweek action. Sekhukhune now lead second place Sundowns by two points with Chiefs, Galaxy and Pirates all within reach if they can take advantage of their games in hand.
