Betway Premiership: Stellenbosch FC bolster squad

Stellenbosch FC has signed defender Siviwe Nkwali and striker Muzomuhle Khanyi days after the four players left the South African side.

The Betway Premiership team released Kenyan defender Brian Onyango, while Liam De Kock, midfielder Sinhle Nduli and striker Shaakir Ahmed left to seek greener pastures.

Now, coach Steve Barker has started filling the squad gaps with Nkwali joining from Cape Town Spurs.

The 20-year-old, who helped South Africa under-20 national football team win the U-20 CAF Africa Cup of Nations trophy, has since expressed his delight to sign for the Western Cape-based outfit.

“I’m very happy to be here and grateful to Stellenbosch FC for giving me an opportunity to once again showcase my talents,” Nkwali told Stellenbosch media.

“Stellenbosch has been a top-three club in the past few seasons, and I hope to help the team continue to compete in the league and push for more silverware. I will put in 110% for the team and fight for this badge, and I can’t wait for the season to get started.”

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch FC have acquired the services of Khanyi on a permanent transfer from Hungry Lions FC.

The 26-year-old joins the Maroons after ending the 2024-25 campaign as the league’s leading goalscorer with 18 goals to his name.

“It’s an honour to join a club with the winning mentality of Stellenbosch FC,” Khanyi told the club’s media. “It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in my career to join the club, and I already feel.

“I’m here to learn – I know it’s going to be difficult because I’m new at the club and stepping up from the NFD – but I hope I can continue with the form I showed last season.”
