Betway Premiership: Stellenbosch hold on for third place, SuperSport to fight for top flight survival

The 2024-25 season in South Africa’s Betway Premiership is all but complete after Saturday’s slate of games with qualification determined for the CAF Confederation Cup as well as the promotion/relegation playoff. Stellenbosch FC confirmed a third place finish while SuperSport United will have to fight for their top flight status following Saturday’s results.

For most of the league, there was little to play for and that was reflected by a lack of inspired football. League runners-up Orlando Pirates overcame a Patrick Maswanganyi own goal to draw AmaZulu 1-1.

It was the same result in Cape Town where hosts Cape Town City played out a scoreless result with Stellenbosch, good enough for Stellies to confirm third place and qualification for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup after Sekhukhune United fell 2-3 to Golden Arrows. In a midtable clash, Kaizer Chiefs and Polokwane City also played out a less than inspiring 0-0 draw.

SuperSport United will have to duel with the second and third place teams from the second tier Motsepe Foundation Championship for top flight survival after losing 0-2 to Richards Bay.

Only one match remains between Orlando Pirates and Magesi FC on on Wednesday to conclude the campaign for all teams other than SuperSport.
