Mamelodi Sundowns overtook Sekhukhune United for first place in the Betway Premiership after a dominant 4-1 victory over Richards Bay on Saturday.
After a poor display in their first league defeat of the season at Golden Arrows earlier in the week, Bafana Ba Style took out their frustrations on a Richards Bay side that was put under siege throughout Saturday’s encounter.
The hosts scored twice in the opening half hour with Tashreeq Matthews beginning the thrashing in the 15th minute before Malibongwe Khoza tallied his first Betway Premiership goal. Gabadinho Mhango provided a response for Richards Bay but Iqraam Rayners’ penalty kick restored the two-goal advantage heading into halftime.
Matthews doubled his tally soon after the hour mark for a satisfying victory after inconsistent form early in the 2025-26 campaign.
Sundowns are now in first place, one point clear ahead of Sekhukhune United who fell to a 0-1 defeat at Polokwane City.
Mokibelo Ramabu took advantage of Sekhukhune goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata’s failure to cover his near post, firing a low shot through the Zambia national team keeper for the only goal of the match in the 27th minute after receiving a clever pass from Banele Mnguni.
Despite losing star player Oswin Appollis to Orlando Pirates before the current season, Polokwane continue to show their quality by moving into a top-5 position following the victory.
The Limpopo Province-based side were joined by another team in the top-5 that continues to surprise, Durban City. The successor club to defunct Maritzburg United are now in third place following a 3-1 comeback victory over Magesi FC.
Golden Arrows were the other winners on Saturday with a 3-0 result over Orbit College. Two matches will take place on Sunday with Marumo Gallants traveling to face Siwelele FC while Chippa United host struggling Stellenbosch.
