Betway Premiership: Sundowns ease past Cape Town City

While an entertaining Soweto Derby was the focus in South Africa early Saturday, Betway Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns had an easy time maintaining their pace at the top later in the evening.

Goals from Tashreeq Matthews and Iqraam Rayners secured victory for Masandawana who faced little challenge from Cape Town City in a 2-0 victory at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

Rayners was the star of the evening as he continues his return to form after a stretch of substandard performances. The Bafana Bafana forward set up Matthews in the 34th minute with a winding dribble run down the right wing before placing a perfect pass into the path of the winger who was left with a simple finish.

In the 77th minute, it was the turn of Rayners to add to his goal total. Arthur Sales cut inside from the right flank and weighted a perfect defense-splitting pass to find the run of Rayners who fired past a helpless Darren Keet in the Cape Town City goal. Rayners now has eighteen goals in all competitions this season.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Stellenbosch FC took a big step forward in their pursuit of Sekhukhune United for third place and a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. Devon Titus opened the scoring in a 3-0 victory at Golden Arrows, moving Stellies to within a point of Sekukhune who were held to a 1-1 draw by Magesi FC.

Cape Town City’s defeat moves them further behind the pace in the relegation fight after SuperSport United snapped a six-match winless streak in their 2-0 victory over Chippa United. Bradley Grobler and Christian Saile scored the goals for SuperSport who are now three points clear of the relegation playoff position.

TS Galaxy and Richards Bay will clash in Sunday’s only match to wrap up the weekend.
