SuperSport United have avoided relegation from South Africa's Betway Premiership...for now. The Pretoria club finished out a previously postponed match with Golden Arrows on Thursday at Lucas Moripe Stadium, resuming at halftime and playing to a 1-1 draw after a dry and uneventful second half.

The match was previously abandoned at halftime on February 23 with the score at 1-1 when the power went out but its resumption became a point of focus due to its implications for the relegation battle. SuperSport needed a draw or victory on Thursday to avoid qualifying for the promotion/relegation playoff and managed to avoid defeat.

There is still likely more drama ahead with Cape Town City now the team designated to take part in the playoff after dropping to 15th position following Thursday's result. The Citizens will take on Orbit College and Casric Stars, the second and third place teams from the second division Motsepe Foundation Championship, in a three-team round robin with the top team qualifying to compete in the Betway Premiership next season.

But Cape Town City will likely explore the possibilities of legally challenging Thursday's result. With the rules designating that all players and personnel who were involved in the postponed match must play on resumption, two SuperSport players did not take part and the club have since changed coaches with Gavin Hunt in charge back in February as well as Arrows with recently hired Manqoba Mngqithi as the current coach.

It remains to be seen what will happen but for now it will be Cape Town City who will take part in the playoffs, the dates for which have not been officially announced yet.
