Betway Premiership: Late drama as Stellenbosch and AmaZulu claim points

It was a day of high-stakes drama in the Betway Premiership as late goals and individual brilliance defined the Saturday action at both the Athlone and Old Peter Mokaba Stadiums.

From Tshegofatso Mabasa’s clinical finishing in Cape Town to a defensive heist by Usuthu in Polokwane, the league standings saw a significant shake-up as the race for top-eight spots and CAF positions intensifies.

At Athlone Stadium, Stellenbosch FC tightened their grip on a top-eight position in the Betway Premiership with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a resilient Chippa United side. The afternoon belonged to Mabasa, who turned the game on its head with a quick-fire double in the first half.

His first arrived in the 32nd minute, nodding home from close range after a well-weighted delivery from Langelihle Phili. Mabasa was at it again just three minutes later, expertly guiding a header into the bottom corner following an assist from Enyinnaya Kazie Godswill.

Despite the two-goal cushion, the Chilli Boys refused to surrender. Sinoxolo Kwayiba gave the visitors hope in the 81st minute, calmly slotting home a penalty after drawing a foul from Thabo Moloisane. Chippa pushed desperately for an equaliser in stoppage time, with Azola Matrose winning several dangerous free-kicks, but the Stellies’ defence held firm to secure all three points and move to 28 points on the log.

Meanwhile, at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, AmaZulu FC pulled off a dramatic 1-0 smash-and-grab victory against Polokwane City. For much of the contest, it appeared the points would be shared as the home side dominated the chances.

Rise and Shine were left wondering what might have been after Juan Mutudza rattled the crossbar with a stinging direct free-kick in the first half, while Mokibelo Ramabu found himself repeatedly thwarted by the alert Olwethu Mzimela in the Usuthu goal.

However, the Betway Premiership game took a definitive turn in the 87th minute when Thapelo Matlhoko became the hero for the visitors. Matlhoko was on hand to poke home from very close range after a pinpoint cross from Riaan Hanamub, silencing the home crowd.

The victory propels AmaZulu to third in the Betway Premiership standings with 37 points, cementing their status as genuine contenders for one of the three inter-club CAF spots, while Polokwane City remains seventh with 29 points after a frustrating afternoon in front of goal.
