Betway Premiership: Zwane challenges AmaZulu FC to build on last season

AmaZulu FC coach Arthur Zwane has challenged his team to build on last season’s decent performance in South Africa’s top-flight league.

The former Kaizer Chiefs handler has set the target ahead of their 2025-2026 Betway Premiership opener against Orbit College FC on Saturday.

The first-ever meeting between Usuthu and the rookies will take place at Princesses Magogo Stadium in Durban at 3:00pm Southern African time.

AmaZulu warmed up for the new campaign by playing against Stellenbosch FC in a game the former lost 3-2 in extra-time of the MTN8 quarter-final last weekend.

Despite the defeat, Zwane picked positives from the game and wants his team to improve on that when welcoming Orbit.

Zwane has made it clear that they “want to continue where we left off and build on our log position from last season. The battle for the top eight will be fierce, but we are ready.”

He added: “The games will come thick and fast, but at least this time we’ve got a full week to prepare. You can imagine if after playing this tough match, we had to play on Wednesday — it was going to take a lot from us. But this time we can recover and prepare the players both physically and psychologically for what’s to come against Orbit.”

Usuthu are unbeaten in three straight league matches stretching from last season and would want to keep that record as they push for a top-eight finish. However, they are up against an opposition they have never met and know little about.

AmaZulu settled for a sixth place last season while Orbit sneaked their way into the Betway Premiership via promotional play-offs following a strong finish in the second-tier Motsepe Foundation Championship.
