Big Bullets’ Airtel Top 8 triumph not extraordinary – Mponda

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets mentor Peter Mponda has downplayed his team’s Airtel Top 8 cup retention on Sunday. He says there is nothing extraordinary as they have simply matched last year’s feat.

The former Malawian international made the remarks in a post-match interview after leading the People’s Team, as Bullets are called, to a 4-3 post-match penalty win over Silver Strikers in the final. The game took place at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Asked how it felt winning his first coaching silverware, Mponda said there was nothing special winning the cup, as Bullets also claimed it last year after beating Silver 1-0 in the final.

“I don’t think there is anything extraordinary,” the former Flames skipper said. “Last season, the team won the Airtel cup and today, we have matched that feat. We haven’t achieved anything. We just need to build on this victory.”

The former Black Leopards assistant coach was in charge of Silver last season when they lost to Bullets. He left the Lilongwe-based club to pick up the Bullets job this season following the exit of Kalisto Pasuwa.

Mponda, nonetheless, gave his players credit for holding their nerves to convert all their penalties. The two teams drew 1-1 in regulation time with Maxwell Gasten scoring for Bullets before Stain Davie equalized for Silver.
