USA side Boston Legacy confirm signing of Uganda women’s star Fauzia Najjemba

National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) newcomers Boston Legacy FC have officially confirmed the signing of Uganda women’s national team forward Fauzia Najjemba on a two-year contract, with an option to extend her stay at the American top flight club.

The 22-year-old attacker joins the Massachusetts-based side as a free agent after parting ways with Russian outfit FC Dynamo at the expiry of her contract, bringing an exciting African flair to a team preparing for its maiden season in the NWSL.

Boston Legacy announced Najjemba’s arrival on Tuesday, hailing her as one of their key reinforcements ahead of their historic debut campaign in the top-flight of women’s football in the United States.

“I’m really excited to join Boston Legacy,” Najjemba said after putting pen to paper. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to give my all for the team. I’m so proud to represent Boston and eager to get to work.”

Najjemba’s move caps an impressive journey that has seen her feature for Mukono High School, Isra Soccer Academy and Kampala Queens, before spells abroad with Kazakhstan giants BIIK Kazygurt and later FC Dynamo in Russia, whom she joined in 2023.

Her switch to the NWSL also sees her become only the second Ugandan player to play in the league, following in the footsteps of Shadia Nankya, who signed for Washington Spirit last year from Egypt’s FC Masar and spent last season on loan at Dallas Trinity FC in the USL Super League.

Founded in 2023, Boston Legacy FC are gearing up for their first-ever NWSL campaign, and the acquisition of Najjemba underlines the club’s ambition as they build a competitive squad for their historic debut season.
