Botswana women’s national team captain Sedilame Maitumelo Bosija has dismissed any suggestion that the team will be under pressure during the upcoming CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The Mares have been drawn in Group B alongside Algeria, Nigeria and Tunisia, and they will kick off their campaign against Algeria at Stade Père Jégo on Sunday, July 6. According to Bosija, Botswana will draw motivation from regional powerhouses like Zambia and South Africa, who have made notable progress both continentally and globally.

“Honestly, there’s no pressure. For us, it’s more motivation,” Bosija stated, as quoted by Bola News. “We always want to push hard to be like the likes of Zambia and South Africa. It shows that we too can compete at this level and maybe even qualify for the World Cup or reach the WAFCON finals.

“So it’s just about going out there, having fun, and showing what we are capable of.”

Bosija further said she will be happy if the final is between COSAFA teams in the tournament.

“To be honest, I’ll be happy if a COSAFA team makes it to the top four. A final of COSAFA teams could be great,” she added.

After playing against Algeria, Botswana will come up against Nigeria on Thursday, July 10, before winding up their group matches against Tunisia on July 13.
