Botswana’s Mares will kickstart their early preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals by playing a friendly against Morocco on November 28, 2024.
Botswana Football Association (BFA) has confirmed that the Alex Malete-led side will line up against the hosts of the forthcoming WAFCON at Saniat Rmel Stadium, Morocco, at 6:00 PM (GMT).
“This is a crucial match for our team as they gear up for the WAFCON 2024 tournament. Let’s show our support and cheer on the Botswana Senior Women’s National Team as they represent us on the international stage,” BFA’s statement reads.
BFA leadership, led by its president Oabile Babitseng, has since met the Mares to inspire confidence in them as they prepare for the WAFCON finals.
“As The Mares get ready to showcase their talent on the international stage, the BFA officials conveyed their confidence in the team’s abilities, wishing them success in both upcoming matches,” a statement by the BFA reads. “The leadership emphasized the significance of these friendlies in preparing the team for future competitions, urging the players to continue working hard, maintaining unity, and representing Botswana with pride.”
The Mares are leaving no stone unturned as they were handed a tough draw, sharing Group B with heavyweights Nigeria, Algeria and Tunisia at the forthcoming WAFCON.
Botswana should be seeking to build on their debut showing at the 2022 WAFCON finals when they reached the quarterfinals, before losing 2-1 to Moroccans to exit the competition with heads held high. Morocco will host WAFCON from 5 to 26 July 2025. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are the holders of the continental championship.
