Botswana’s Township Rollers coach Srdan Zivonjnov has resigned from his position, saying he ‘was taking responsibility’ for whatever has happened at the FNB Premiership club.
The Serbian released a statement announcing his departure from the team that is affectionately called Popa, seven months after his arrival. The FNB Premiership side has of late been in financial problems.
“Seven months ago I arrived at this great club and immediately felt the warmth, pride and passion that make Township Rollers a giant in Botswana football,” the coach,” the statement reads.
“Together we lived a dream filled with hope, belief and beautiful football. My goal was clear from day one: to help this club return to the top where it belongs.”
𝐙𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐣𝐧𝐨𝐯 added that he had enjoyed the time he spent with the club but it was time to leave after presiding over 11 games, losing once, winning five and drawing five. Meanwhile, Garabile Seabo is taking charge of the team.
“Our matches became more than just football. They became a statement of who we are and what we could achieve. I am deeply grateful to the players for their commitment and to my professional staff for standing strong with me throughout this journey,” the statement further reads.
“Unfortunately, the time has come for me to take full responsibility for everything that has happened within the club and step down from my position as Head Coach. This decision was not easy, but it is one I make with honesty, respect and love for the club.”
The Serbian joined the 16-time league champions earlier this year to replace Belgian Abdelaziz Karkache. He leaves the team placed fifth in the standings, seven points behind leaders and defending champions Gaborone United.
Popa settled for a distant sixth-place finish last season.
