Botswana skipper Tumisang Orebonye sets AFCON target

Botswana skipper Tumisang Orebonye says the Zebras are geared up to build on the foundation their legends laid at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

The Wydad Casablanca striker said this as the Zebras prepared for their second appearance at the continental finals following their maiden qualification to the 2012 edition.

Botswana owed their first qualification to the coaching acumen of coach Stanley Tshosane and star players such as goalkeeper Modiri Marumo, forwards Dispy Selolwane and Joel Magorosi.

How Botswana fared at AFCON in 2012

During their maiden AFCON appearance, the Zebras lost all their group-stage games to leaders Ghana, Mali and Guinea, a trend Orebonye wants to improve.

Now, it is South African coach Morena Ramoreboli in charge of Botswana’s new generation of players, including Orebonye.

The Wydad Casablanca player said the current generation of the Zebras is aware of the foundation their legends set at the AFCON finals and want to better that.

“We are our own generation and we did it [qualifying for AFCON] in our own way. We have to continue where our legends left,” he said.

“We know that they came back without a win, so we are hoping that we will proceed to the last-16 or any stage where they didn’t go.”

The Zebras were drawn in Group D at AFCON alongside Senegal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Benin.
