Former Algeria national team center back Madjid Bougherra is closing on a return to the Algeria 'A' national team for locally-based players as a head coach. Bougherra, 42, previously led the side to the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup title and reached the final of the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) for locally-based players on home soil.
According to DZ Foot, Bougherra discussed his return with Algeria Football Federation (FAF) president Walid Sadi on Tuesday. FAF wants Bougerra to replicate his title winning form with the 'A' side yet again. In 2021, Bougherra won the FIFA Arab Cup with Algeria beating neighbors Tunisia 2-0 in Qatar.
Bougherra will be tasked to prepare his charges for the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar after Algeria withdrew from participation in the qualifying process for the upcoming 2024 CHAN. Prior to his imminent appointment he was the head coach of Qatari top division side Al-Markhiya.
FAF is expected to unveil him as the coach in the coming days. This new development came in conjunction with the sacking of Ameul Mansoul, the national technical director. Mansoul's dismissal came following Algeria’s failure to qualify for the 2025 editions of the U-17 and U-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
