Former Zamalek striker Khalid Boutaib has opened up about his short spell in Egyptian football, admitting that his time with the Cairo giants did not live up to expectations.
Speaking to MBC Masr, the Moroccan forward, who now plays for Kawkab Marrakech, reflected on his stint with Zamalek between 2019 and 2020:
“I spent a short time at Zamalek because of issues with the management and because of my injury. It was regrettable, because I came with great enthusiasm and wanted to perform well and achieve success.”
Boutaib managed to lift two trophies during his spell, including the 2019 CAF Confederation Cup, but insists the experience felt incomplete:
“I won two titles with Zamalek, but the experience was not fulfilling and left me with a bitter taste in Egypt.”
The 38-year-old also opened up on how he was portrayed in the media at the time:
“A lot of bad things were said about me in Egypt. They made me look like someone dishonest, while in reality I did everything I could to come back from injury and help the team. I won’t reveal everything that happened, because I don’t want to stoop to that level.”
Despite the difficulties, Boutaib acknowledged that Zamalek still hold a place in his heart:
“Some people in the club, the players, and the fans were not to blame for what happened with me. Despite everything, the experience was important, and I don’t diminish what I lived there. The club will remain in my heart, and I hope they achieve many titles.”
During his year at Zamalek, Boutaib made 24 appearances, scoring five goals and providing two assists. His contract was eventually terminated following a dispute with the club regarding the handling of a surgical procedure.
