‘I’m here to win’: Colombian Star Brayan León lands at Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have officially fired a warning shot to their title rivals by unveiling Colombian striker Brayan León as their latest high-profile acquisition.

The 25-year-old forward joins from Independiente Medellín in a deal reportedly worth over R50 million ($3.2 million). His arrival comes at a pivotal moment for the “Brazilians,” who are currently locked in a fierce battle for the Betway Premiership title, trailing log-leaders Orlando Pirates by just two points.

A Statement of Intent by Sundowns

León arrives with an impressive pedigree from the Colombian Primera A, having registered 13 goals and 7 assists in 40 appearances during the 2025 season. Speaking at his unveiling, the striker made his ambitions clear.

“I chose Sundowns because of new challenges,” León said. “I think this is the best and the most successful team. I am here to win titles and to make it even bigger than it already is.”

León isn’t the only fresh face arriving to bolster the attack. He is set to link up with fellow marquee signing Monnapule Saleng at the club’s mid-season training base in Polokwane. The duo is expected to be integrated quickly as the squad prepares for the league’s resumption on January 19 against Orbit College, following the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Maintaining the South American Connection

León becomes the latest addition to Sundowns’ long-standing tradition of recruiting talent from South America. He joins a squad that already features Marcelo Allende (Chile) and Arthur Sales (Brazil)

His signing also effectively settles the club’s foreign quota, reportedly closing the door on a return for Matías Esquivel, who had been on loan in Greece.

With a congested fixture list that includes the CAF Champions League group stages resuming on January 23, León’s clinical finishing and “20-goal contribution” profile will be vital for a side looking to secure a record ninth consecutive domestic league title.
