Brendan Rodgers explains Celtic decision to sign Kelechi Iheanacho

Scottish club Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has shed light on his decision to bring Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho to Celtic Park.

The Super Eagles forward joined the Scottish champions on a free transfer this summer, after his recent departure from Spanish club Sevilla, where he and the club mutually agreed to terminate his contract just before the closure of the transfer window.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Celtic’s clash with Kilmarnock this weekend, Rodgers, who coached Iheanacho at Leicester City, told Celtic TV the 28-year-old ‘s talent.

“Thankfully at the end of the window there was a player that was available that I know very well. Kel was a player that was brilliant for me at Leicester. I only want to take someone here who is robust and he’s a genuine talent.”

Rodgers added, underlining the strategic nature of the signing after losing a player to the transfer market.

“And if I can get that out of him again it could be a big plus for us. So we lost Adam. Adam made a really good contribution here.”

Iheanacho’s move to Celtic represents a fresh start after a challenging spell in Spain and a brief, unproductive loan at Middlesbrough.
