Bright Osayi-Samuel explains decision to represent Nigeria over England

Birmingham City right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel has explained why he opted to represent Nigeria instead of England.

Speaking with OmaSportsTV, the 28-year-old stated that his strong connection to his heritage and the team spirit within the Nigerian squad influenced his choice to play for the Super Eagles over the Three Lions.

Osayi-Samuel noted that his decision to wear the green and white went beyond football, deeply rooted in his family connections.

“It’s because my mum and dad were really dedicated to making sure I learned about Nigerian culture and the food — I’ve always had that kind of experience since I was little.

“When I was in Spain, it was the same situation. When you come to England, you begin to learn more and play for an English team, and you get more involved with the England setup. But in my mind, I always wanted to play for Nigeria.”

Although Osayi-Samuel began his career as a winger, his transition to right-back helped shape his journey with the national team. He was a key figure during Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, starting six out of the team’s seven matches.

Osayi-Samuel made his first competitive appearance for Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier against Guinea-Bissau under former coach José Peseiro.

Since making his debut in a high-profile friendly against Portugal, the defender has earned 32 caps for the Super Eagles.
