Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has identified Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Petersen as a key figure in South Africa’s future, despite the goalkeeper missing out on the latest 23-man squad to face Panama.
As Bafana Bafana begin their high-stakes preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the goalkeeping department has become a major talking point. While captain Ronwen Williams remains the undisputed number one, Broos has admitted he is already scouting for a long-term successor to the 34-year-old talisman.

Petersen, whose form at Naturena has seen a massive resurgence, was reportedly high on the Belgian mentor’s list for the upcoming friendlies at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and Cape Town Stadium. However, a recent surgery has sidelined the Amakhosi star at a crucial juncture.
“When you see Brandon Petersen, he was performing very well with Chiefs,” Broos admitted during his squad announcement on SABC. “I thought I could take him now, but he is injured. It’s good that you have people to back up those guys who are always there. One day, we shall have to replace them.”
This isn’t the first time Petersen has been on the veteran coach’s radar. Broos revealed that he had considered the 31-year-old over a year ago before a dip in performance forced a rethink.
Now, with Chiefs’ defence looking more compact, Petersen has played his way back into the national conversation. Broos emphasized that the hunt for the “next Ronwen” is officially on, noting that even a player of Williams’ caliber cannot go on forever.
“Ronwen cannot play until he is 40. So, we have to look for the future. Maybe those guys like [Renaldo] Leaner or Petersen will be Bafana Bafana goalkeepers in the future.”
With Petersen unavailable, Sekhukhune United’s Renaldo Leaner has been drafted in alongside Williams and Ricardo Goss. The exclusion of Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine remains a shock to many, but Broos’ comments suggest he is looking for a specific profile of “intelligence and consistency” as he builds toward the global showpiece in North America.
The upcoming double-header against Panama represents more than just a friendly; it is the first real test for the next generation of South African goalkeepers fighting to step out of Williams’ formidable shadow.
