Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has publicly named his preferred candidate to take over the national team reins once he retires in 2026, throwing his support behind current assistant coach Helman Mkhalele.
The Belgian, who recently guided Bafana to their first FIFA World Cup qualification in 23 years, reaffirmed that he will step down after the 2026 global showpiece when he turns 74.
Broos explained his decision is purely based on age and a desire to focus on his family, not any dissatisfaction with his current role.
“If I was 10 years younger, you can be sure I would want to stay here for another two years… I’m very happy here,” said Broos during a round table discussion with SA journalists on Thursday.
When discussing his successor, Broos was emphatic that continuity is key. He believes Orlando Pirates legend Mkhalele is the ideal person to maintain the momentum he has built with the squad.
“I think the best thing to do is for Helman [Mkhalele] to become the coach after me, because then you have a follow-up on the same thing,” Broos stated. “When Helman takes the team, the way of work and the philosophy will be the same, with a little bit more African thing because I’m European. Helman 95% he thinks the same thing as me.”
However, the veteran coach did raise a significant red flag regarding Mkhalele’s potential promotion: “The only problem with Helman is that he doesn’t have the qualifications,” he noted, referring to the necessary coaching credentials required for the position.
Broos also praised Mkhalele’s growth and contribution to the technical team, revealing that the former Orlando Pirates star is now a vocal and active participant in crucial decisions, including squad selection. He emphasised Mkhalele’s loyalty, humility, and deep knowledge of the game as reasons he enjoys their working relationship.
