Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has sent a clear message to his squad following the high-profile exclusion of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
Speaking during the announcement of his 23-man squad for this month’s double-header against Panama, the Belgian tactician warned that no player’s position is guaranteed.
The friendlies serve as critical preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where South Africa will make a historic return to the global stage. Having last qualified on merit in 2002, the pressure is on Broos to refine a squad capable of progressing beyond the group stages for the first time in the nation’s history.
Despite Chaine’s scintillating form for the Buccaneers—boasting 14 clean sheets in 21 appearances this season—he was the most notable casualty of Broos’ post-AFCON “refresh.”
Chaine, who served as backup to captain Ronwen Williams during the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, has been replaced by Sekhukhune United’s Renaldo Leaner. Explaining the tactical switch, Broos emphasised the need to test his depth.
“I think Leaner is always in the preliminary squad, and I think it was a good occasion now to see him again because he was with us a few months ago,” said Broos on Thursday. “We must be careful with injuries for our goalkeepers. We need a backup, and I think Leaner can be that for us.”
While Chaine’s omission came as a shock to many, Broos was quick to clarify that the decision wasn’t necessarily a reflection of poor form, but rather a challenge to the entire squad to remain competitive.
“Everybody has to be worried in the squad if they don’t perform,” Broos added sternly. “I’m not saying Sipho is not performing, but everyone has to perform. This is not charity; this is very serious. Again, I want to see Leaner.”
The upcoming matches at Moses Mabhida and DHL Stadium represent Bafana’s first outing since their disappointing continental exit. With the World Cup on the horizon, the message from the “Belgian Mentor” is loud and clear: past reputation counts for little in the quest for global glory.
