Broos finds positives in Panama draw but demands better decision-making

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos was left with mixed emotions following South Africa’s 1-1 draw against Panama at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday night, praising his side’s tactical execution while lamenting a lack of clinical finishing and a preventable defensive lapse.

The international friendly, a key building block in South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations, saw the visitors take an early lead through Yoel Bárcenas. The goal stemmed from a misplaced pass by Khuliso Mudau as Bafana attempted to play out from the back under pressure. However, the hosts showed resilience, with Oswin Appollis netting the equaliser shortly after the restart to ensure the spoils were shared in Durban.

Speaking after the final whistle, Broos was adamant that his team’s overall performance deserved a victory, citing the high volume of opportunities created throughout the 90 minutes.

Broos Reacts to Bafana’s 1-1 Draw with Panama

“I think there was a very good team on the pitch; the South African team played a very good game,” Broos told SABC3. “Over the 90 minutes, I think we had eight or nine chances. We played good football, there was depth in our game, the combinations were good, and the positioning was good.”

Despite the fluid attacking play, the Belgian tactician was critical of the decision-making that led to Panama’s opener. He revealed that he had a stern message for his players at the interval regarding over-complicating play in their own defensive third.

“Everything was good, except one thing, and that’s the goal we received. I said at half-time to the players, there is nothing wrong with kicking the ball in the stands when you’re under pressure,” Broos explained.

“We tried there also to come out in combination, but that was not a situation where we had to combine. Kick the ball in the stands, and it’s over. The second chance they had was also a little bit too easy. We lost the ball, and they could’ve had a second goal.”

Reflecting on the missed opportunities that could have turned the draw into a win, Broos added: “If you see all the chances we created, it is a pity that we didn’t win it.”

The stalemate provides Broos with plenty of food for thought as Bafana Bafana continue their intensive training camp ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, with the coach likely to focus on defensive discipline and finishing in the final third.
