Four years into his tenure, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has offered a reflection on what he deems the pinnacle of his time in charge of the South African National Team.
This introspection comes as the Belgian tactician marks a big milestone, as he became the longest-serving Bafana Bafana coach as of May 5, 2025.
Broos's successful reign now surpasses the record previously held by the revered late Clive Barker, who also led Bafana Bafana for precisely four years.
While Barker holds the unique distinction of being the only coach to guide Bafana Bafana to an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph, the 73-year-old Broos is steadily approaching another notable achievement, drawing closer to the 50-match mark at the helm of the South African squad.
The Belgian tactician has pinpointed the bronze medal achieved at the last AFCON edition in Ivory Coast as the undisputed highlight of his tenure as Bafana head coach.
"It's easy, hey. The bronze medal at the AFCON is the highlight," Broos declared on Thursday in Johannesburg. His comments came after he announced the Bafana squad set to face Tanzania and Mozambique in international friendlies this June.
“The games we played there with no belief that many people had in that team, and you saw us game after game, you saw us growing, beating Morocco, and going to the semi-finals. If we had been a bit lucky, the last-minute chance by Khuliso Mudau, against Nigeria, we should have been in the final.
"But again, we were beautifully happy with the bronze medal. So for me, that was really the highlight of the last four years here with Bafana Bafana.”
Bafana will play two international friendlies in June, hosting Tanzania at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday, June 6, followed by a clash with Mozambique at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria four days later.
