The StarTimes Uganda Premier League’s early picture took fresh twists on Matchday 4, with BUL FC and KCCA FC recording statement wins to close the gap at the summit, while SC Villa and Kitara picked up vital victories in dramatic fashion.
At the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, BUL handed leaders Buhimba United Saints their first defeat of the season in commanding style. The Jinja-based side ran out 3-0 winners, thanks to goals from Ibrahim Mugulusi, Seiri Arigumaho, and Jerome Kirya. Mugulusi’s creative display earned him the Man of the Match accolade as BUL climbed to within a point of the top after four games.
Under the Nakivubo floodlights, KCCA edged Express FC 1-0 in a tense Kampala derby. Sammy Ssebaduka’s 71st-minute strike from Joel Sserunjogi’s corner was the difference, helping the Kasasiro Boys move level on points with BUL.
Ssebaduka’s all-round performance earned him the Man of the Match award as Express slipped to sixth place.
Former champions URA FC were once again left frustrated after a goalless stalemate away to Lugazi FC. Both teams struck the woodwork, but neither could find the breakthrough. URA’s young right back Justine Opiro stood out and was named Man of the Match as Lugazi rose to fifth place on five points, one ahead of the Tax Collectors.
In Luzira, Maroons and newcomers Calvary shared spoils in a dull 0-0 encounter. Emmanuel Derrick Were shone brightest for the hosts, earning the Man of the Match award. The result leaves Maroons ninth on four points, while Calvary continue to search for their first win, sitting just above the relegation zone.
On Friday, record champions SC Villa produced a late comeback to edge Police FC 2-1 at the FUFA stadium, Kadiba. Police had taken an early lead through Bedia Djuma Ikamba, but substitutes Geoffrey Gagganga and Charles Lwanga turned the tide for the Jogoos.
Lwanga’s stoppage-time winner secured Villa’s first win in three matches and earned him Man of the Match honours.
In Hoima, Kitara edged Mbarara City 3-2 in a thrilling five-goal contest at the Royals Park. Isaac Amutuhaire and Jimmy Kalema put Kitara ahead before Mbarara fought back through Innocent Wafula and Henry Kitegenyi. However, a late Wahab Gadafi penalty sealed victory for the hosts, who climbed to 10th on the table.
Saturday’s only fixture saw Entebbe UPPC overcome NEC FC 1-0 at Bugonga Fisheries, courtesy of Samuel Junior Kawawa’s second-half strike. The victory lifted Abdallah Mubiru’s side to seven points, while NEC remained winless after four matches.
