Uganda Cranes head coach Morley Byekwaso has thrown his full weight behind the depth and quality of his squad ahead of the CECAFA Four Nations tournament set to kick off on July 21 in Arusha, Tanzania.
The regional showpiece is not just about silverware—it serves as a crucial warm-up for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Uganda will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania from August 2 to 30.
Speaking after the team’s Saturday training session at MTN Omondi Stadium, Byekwaso expressed satisfaction with the progress made during preparations.
“We’ve had enough training, and the boys are well prepared,” he said. “We’re focused on progressing past the group stages. I’m very confident because we’ve spent a good amount of time with the players — they’re fit, knowledgeable, and ready. I believe in these boys, and I’m sure they’ll represent the country well.”
Adding to the optimism was midfield maestro Abdul Karim Watambala, who praised the coaching staff and the collective mindset within the team.
“The coaches have prepared us well, and we’re looking forward to the tournament,” Watambala said. “Every player has personal ambitions, but it all starts with the Uganda Cranes. We have to work for the team’s objectives first. Our mission is to make the nation proud, and the first step is playing good football and advancing past the group stage.”
Watambala, an influential figure in the Cranes’ midfield, brings valuable CHAN experience and leadership to a youthful squad brimming with potential.
The team is expected to depart for Arusha tomorrow morning, shifting gears into final preparations for the group-stage action.
Looking further ahead, Uganda faces a stern test in CHAN 2024 after being drawn in Group C alongside Algeria, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger. Their fixtures are as follows:
With momentum building and unity evident, Byekwaso and Watambala’s confidence could be the driving force Uganda needs to make a statement both in Arusha and at the CHAN finals.
